Lizzie, born as just Lisette, grows up living with her father in a small settlement in the depths of the Coral Sea.
As is typical for anglerfish, the females are bigger, stronger and overall intended to be hunters. With her mother out of the picture, Lizzie’s father forces Lizzie to take on the role of the huntress early on. Although not unskilled playing predator, Lizzie is highly uncomfortable with the brutality of taking life of other fish and smaller merfolk, especially at such a young age. The older she turns, the more capable of refusal she becomes. Fights with her father escalate, threats and psychological pressure turn into physical violence while Lizzie and her childhood friend collect artefacts and stories about life on land.
Lizzie develops her Unique Magic in response to her father’s more frequent outbursts and manages to scare him off momentarily in her own little outbursts.
Further detaching herself from her father, Lizzie and her friend dream up their future on land. They get in touch with travellers, exchange little treasures for books and amass a small collection of storybooks and encyclopedias. Whereas Lizzie’s friend grows infatuated with machinery and technology, Lizzie develops an affinity for plants and potions. They often hide away, indulging themselves in their books, entirely engrossed in their favourite subjects.
Through the connections they make, first Lizzie’s friend is granted a scholarship at Night Raven College and one year later Lizzie. The both of them spend one year at camp each, learning human customs and catching up on school. Lizzie picks up the word Lemontree as her surname and goes by Lizzie as a nickname. She finally feels at ease detached from her upbringing and the body she blames for it, passing as a human for as long as her teeth are not showing.
In her freshman year, Lizzie attends class 1-C along with Azul and Jamil.
Although her exams range from stellar to passing, her verbal grades are severely lacking. One faithful day Professor Crewel demands Lizzie stay after class and lectures her, leaving her terrified and teary-eyed. He is quick to regret the decision and offers her to improve her verbal grades by practising with him during his breaks. Growing more comfortable with Professor Crewel, Lizzie develops a habit of staying after class to ask questions and go more in-depth about her interests.
Lizzie loses part of her shyness in the process and Crewel assigns her the unofficial title of “Head of the Gardening Committee” along with the task of organising the Science Club’s gardening duties. Although still somewhat of a loner, Lizzie now feels comfortable taking up space at least.
Her overall school performance greatly improves and sets her apart from her peers further, causing Crewel to suggest she may skip her sophomore year.
Lizzie reunites with her childhood friend over the course of summer break they spend at school, knowing she was going to attend class 3-B alongside him. He asks her to be his girlfriend a few weeks into summer break, to which she obliges, afraid of losing him again. Summer break goes by with the both of them reliving old times and spending time with each other.
